Richardson Trophy Matches

The Richardson Trophy is a matchplay team event which is participated in by all six Northern Counties of England, i.e. Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria.
Each County plays the other 5 counties every year in daily matches, played off scratch, with seven players per team.
In 2026 Yorkshire will have two home matches at Ilkley Golf Club and three away matches at Hale GC (Cheshire), Formby Ladies GC (Lancashire) and Furness GC (Cumbria).
The matches are hotly contested and winning the Trophy is the Jewel in the Crown for the winning County.
The winner of the Richardson Trophy is the County with the most match points.
Match Dates:
June 29th v Chesire at Hale GC - Yorkshire 5 Cheshire 2
July 17th v Northumberland at Ilkley GC - Yorkshire 5 1/2 Northumberland 1 1/2
July 26th v Lancashire at Formby Ladies GC - Yorkshire 2 1/2 Lancashire 4 1/2
August 17th v Durham at Ilkley GC - Yorkshire 6 1/2 Durham 1/2

August 28th v Cumbria at Furness GC .

After the recent heatwaves, Ilkley was shrouded in mist and light rain for our match against Durham. With all to play for, the team pulled off a magnificent victory by 6 1/2 to 1/2 to keep the dream alive for 2026. Worthy of note was Ruth Skaife-Clarke's half against Helen Robson with Helen eagling 2 holes and playing wonderful golf, Ruth's nerves held firm once again, holing a great putt on the 18th to secure the half point.
Congratulations also to Cath Lake (Fulford) who received her County Colours having represented the YSLGA in 3 matches.

After the intense heat of the past few weeks, woolly hats and multiple layers were the order of the day for the intrepid souls playing at Formby Ladies GC. High gusty winds on a tricky links course made life very difficult for the team and despite a huge effort from all, Lancashire prevailed 4 1/2 - 2 1/2.

Fortunately the extreme temperatures of the past fortnight abated meaning that conditions were ideal for the first home match against Northumberland. It was wonderful to welcome back Angela Morris to the team following her recovery from illness and we  also welcomed Julia Mountfield , playing in her first match for the YSLGA.
The outcome was a solid 5 1/2 - 1 1/2 victory for Yorkshire and the team looks forward to their next challenge against Lancashire at Formby Ladies GC on 26th July.

Yorkshire played their first match of the 2026 Richardson Trophy campaign at Hale Golf Club in Cheshire. The team of Ruth Skaife-Clarke, Emma Brown, Cath Lake, Lynn Wass, Karen Jobling, Julie Wheeldon and Heather Butcher took on defending champions Cheshire on a tricky and tight 9 hole course. In a closely fought contest, 3 matches finished on the 18th and 3 on the 17th, Yorkshire prevailed to win the match 5-2.
